Mt Wilson Circuit walk

DIFFICULTY: Hard, AWT GRADE 4 AWT Grade information. 18 km, altitude gain approx 500 m
WHO IS THIS WALK FOR?: This walk is the one hard and long walk a year scheduled by the GDTA for the second year running. It is only suitable for experienced walkers who regularly walk long distances in steep country. We have reduced the walk length a little as compared to last year to increase the number of walkers who it may appeal to. Due to the lack of phone reception and the inaccessibility of some of the tracks by vehicles there will be limited options for bail-out. The walk is not suitable for children.
DESCRIPTION: This walk is a day-long adventure in the Wombat forest that includes steep ascents and descents, short off-track sections and a fording of the Lerderderg River. The panoramic views, without human-made structures, provide a sense of remoteness. We will be without phone reception for part of the day and can immerse ourselves in nature and history with few modern-day intrusions. We start near Bullarto South from an easily accessible track off the bitumen and climb Mt Wilson while the legs are fresh. Morning tea amongst the large basalt boulders on top of the mount. Following the Mount Wilson ridge, we veer off towards Wild Dog Road for some tall tree and steep gully scenery and then climb back up to the Mount Wilson Range. We descend steeply to the Lerderderg River, lunch on the river. The way back will be an easy, gradual climb through a diverse landscape, EVC (Ecological Vegetation Classes) classes: Damp Forest (DF), Herb-rich Foothill Forest (H-RFF) and Scrubby Foothill Forest (SFF).
BRING: Necessary: 2 L water, Backpack, Rain jacket, Personal first aid kit, sun hat, and sunscreen, with sufficient food for a long day
Recommended: Gaiters, Walking poles
HEALTH AND SAFETY: Please call or text the walk leader if you are unable to attend on the day.
DOGS: Dogs are not allowed on this walk. Refer to the GDTA dog policy.
BOOKINGS: Bookings are essential—see registration link. You may cancel your booking by returning to the GDTA website page and clicking the cancel button. This will free up a space for other walkers. If the walk is full, you can elect to be put on the waiting list. You will be emailed if a space becomes available. You have 24hrs before the space is withdrawn and offered to the next on the list.
GUEST MEMBERSHIP AND INSURANCE: The walk is free to members and members of affiliated clubs and open to non-members. For non-members, a $10 fee is payable for insurance cover under the Bushwalking Victoria insurance policy. Please note that children under 5 years cannot be covered by this policy.
