DESCRIPTION: This a fairly flat walk along the historic, but still used, Coliban Water Channel. The Channel was built in the 19th century to meet the water needs of Bendigo, a city rich in gold but very poor in water. Designed by J M Brady and completed in it’s first stage in 1877 it had the Malmsbury Reservoir as it’s water source an 70km of open channel with many structures on the way. It has been expanded over the intervening 150 years and still serves a major water need.
This walk is along a section on the eastern side of Leanganyuk (Mt Alexander) and contours around the mountain with many original bluestone structures and a tunnel.
The walk is quite short but there is an option to do an additional loop walk on the top of Leanganyuk after lunch.
There will be a car shuffle to start with, there is plenty of parking at the meeting point but limited parking at the walk start point So be prepared for sme herding of cats.
DIFFICULTY: The walk is rated Easy. The overall elevation gain is less than 200 m.
HEALTH AND SAFETY: If you are ill on the day of the walk, please stay at home. It will be early Autumn so keep an eye on the expected weather, we cancel events at late notice if too hot, fire bans etc. Please call or text the walk leader if you are unable to attend.
GUEST MEMBERSHIP AND INSURANCE: The walk is free to members and open to non-members. For non-members, a $10 fee is payable for insurance cover under the Bushwalking Victoria insurance policy. Please note that children under 5 years cannot be covered by this policy.
BRING: It is recommended, you carry a personal first aid kit, your own medication, water bottles, sun screen and personal hiking gear (sun glasses, walking sticks, small pack, etc). Wear clothing appropriate for the predicted weather conditions on the day. Bring light refreshments and Lunch for breaks.
BOOKINGS: Bookings are essential and open 2 weeks before the walk. You may cancel your booking by returning to this page and clicking the cancel button. This will free up a space for other walkers. If the walk is full, you can elect to be put on the waiting list. You will be emailed if a space becomes available. You have 24hrs before the space is withdrawn and offered to the next on the list.
