Castlemaine Heritage Walk
DATE: Wed April 8
TIME: 9.30 for a 9.45 am start. Walk length approximately 6 km with an estimated duration 2 – 3 hours including stops.
LOCATION: Castlemaine. Start point: Railway Hotel car park (on the western side of Barkers Creek, behind the Castlemaine Railway Station).

DESCRIPTION: From behind the Castlemaine Railway Station, the walk will pass through the Camp Reserve then circuit the former Government Camp, established in 1851, and pass original Camp buildings including the former Court House, Sheriff Colles’s house, Commissioner Bull’s residence, the former Military Quarters, etc. We will then climb the “Freedom Trail” to the old Castlemaine Gaol to take in its view across the township, continue to the Castlemaine Botanic Gardens, then back through the town centre to the starting point. Unfortunately, the perfect location for lunch, the Railway Hotel, is closed on Wednesdays, but there are many other good eateries in town.
DIFFICULTY: Easy. The walk will be along footpaths and walking tracks.
DOGS: Welcome, but must be on leads.
HEALTH AND SAFETY: If you are ill on the day of the walk, please stay at home. It will be Summer so keep an eye on the expected temperature; we cancel events at late notice if too hot, fire bans etc. Please call or text the walk leader if you are unable to attend.
GUEST MEMBERSHIP AND INSURANCE: The walk is free to members and open to non-members. For non-members, a $10 fee is payable for insurance cover under the Bushwalking Victoria insurance policy. Please note that children under 5 years cannot be covered by this policy.
BRING: It is recommended, you carry a personal first aid kit, your own medication, water bottles, sun screen and personal hiking gear (sun glasses, walking sticks, small pack, etc). Wear clothing appropriate for the predicted weather conditions on the day.
BOOKINGS: Bookings are essential and open 2 weeks before the walk.
