International Mountain Day 1 Kooyora
Mount Kooyoora / Guyura IMD Walk
DATE: Sat 6 December
TIME: 10.15am for a 10.30am start. Walk duration is approximately 4 hours including lunch &; stops.
LOCATION: Mount Kooyoora State Park (near Dunolly) – details given to those who register prior to the walk. We are starting later than usual because the start point is around 1.5 hours travel north of Daylesford.
WALK LEADERS: Barry Golding of GDTA, with Castlemaine geologist Clive Willman.
DESCRIPTION: This walk explores part of the elevated, ancient granite landscape within Mount Kooyoora State Park north of Rheola, in central Dja Dja Wurrung Country. It includes a walk through Melville Caves and along the Long Rock Walking Track, featuring huge granite tors and spectacular vistas. While we see the Mount Kooyoora summit (486 metres) nearby from Melville Caves Lookout, we have saved a walk to the summit past the Quartz Crystal Mine for next year’s IMD!
DIFFICULTY: Medium, 8km
DOGS: No dogs are permitted on this walk.
HEALTH AND SAFETY: If you are ill on the day of the walk, please stay at home. It will be early-summer so keep an eye on the forecast temperature. We cancel events at late notice if too hot, fire bans etc. Please call or text the walk leader if you are nable to attend.
GUEST MEMBERSHIP AND INSURANCE: The walk is free to members(and members of affiliated clubs) and open to non-members. For non-members, a $10 fee is payable for insurance cover under the Bushwalking Victoria insurance policy. Please note that children under 5 years
cannot be covered by this policy.
BRING: It is recommended, you carry a personal first aid kit, your own medication, sun hat, water bottles, sun screen and personal hiking gear (sun glasses, walking sticks, small pack, etc). Wear clothing appropriate for the predicted weather conditions on the day. Bring something to drink and snack on during the walk as well as for lunch.
