Two winding descents, the second quite steep, through narrow gold-mined
Sebastopol and Stones gullies. After Helge Trk, you enter high-walled Sailors
Gully, traversing a landscape pockmarked with 1850s mining holes like a World
War 1 battlefield.
Evidence of a large mining dam announces your arrival at Tubal Cain, with its fine
example of a Cornish flue or hillside chimney. There’s a line of deep open shafts
parallel to the track, so exercise care. Two bends on, you pass close to one of the
more complete mining hut ruins found on the track (E side).
Long uphill section to Gurr Trk. Bike track heads off to the west here. Bikers can look
forward to fording the river some 3km further on.
Walkers head straight down Gurr Tk. After crossing Italian Hill Trk, the track narrows
to a walkers-only pad through open grassy forest with some fine red gums.
The walk finishes on an old bridle path, underpinned by drystone walling,
contouring way above the Loddon River.
