Weribee Safari Night Walk 2203

Weribee Safari Night Walk 2203
DATE: Saturday, 22 March 2025
TIME: 5.15 PM for a 5.30 start. Walk duration is approximately 31/2 hours including stops.
LOCATION: Peppertree Park, Bacchus Marsh. Details will be emailed to registered walkers prior to the event. Registrations are essential before noon on Thursday 20 March, 2025.
WALK LEADER: Arie Baelde, with Jodi and Natasha from the Bacchus Marsh Platypus Alliance: https://www.platypusalliance.org.au/
DESCRIPTION: This 7.5 km circuit walk will follow the banks of the Werribee River in urban Bacchus Marsh. Jodi and Natasha will talk to us about the Werribee River platypus and their unique challenges in an urban setting. We will learn about the work of the Alliance and the annual platypus surveys carried out by ecologists. Part of this walk will be on private land in the market garden area and two of the landholders will talk to us briefly about the history of fruit growing and the present day challenges of commercial market gardening in ‘The Marsh’. Platypus are quite secretive outside the breeding season so the chances of seeing one are very low. The river however retains some impressive redgums that provide habitat to other nocturnal creatures.
DIFFICULTY: The walk is rated easy. Walking back to the starting point in the dark will provide some challenge.
HEALTH AND SAFETY: If you are ill on the day of the walk, please stay at home. Please call or text the walk leader if you are unable to attend.
GUEST MEMBERSHIP AND INSURANCE: The walk is free to members and open to non-members. For non-members, a $10 fee is payable for insurance cover under the Bushwalking Victoria insurance policy. Please note that children under 5 years cannot be covered by this policy.
BRING: It is recommended that you carry a personal first aid kit, your own medication, water bottles and personal hiking gear (walking sticks, small pack, etc). Wear clothing appropriate for the predicted weather conditions on the day. Bring light refreshments for breaks. Peppertree Park is a nice place for a picnic dinner prior to the walk. Mosquito repellent may be needed!
NO DOGS: Dogs are not permitted on this walk which includes private land.
BOOKINGS: Bookings are essential at this link: https://www.gdt.org.au/events/weribee-safari-walk-2203#em-event-booking-form
