Moorabool Shire Seniors Festival: Blackwood History walk

TIME: 10:00 AM registration for 10:15 start.
LOCATION: Centre of Blackwood. Final meeting details will be emailed to all registered walkers on Saturday 3rd October.

DESCRIPTION: An easy 4 km walk mostly on made roads with some steepish hills. The walk was developed by local resident Sue Donnelly of Blackwood and District Historical Society in collaboration with the Great Dividing Trail Association (GDTA). The walk will include Red Hill and Golden Point Townships, historic log cabins, Blackwood Cemetery and the Police Camp. There will be a special focus on Blackwood’s pioneer women who were prominent in the town’s commercial development. We will end our walk around 12.15 pm. You are then invited to join us in the garden of the Blackwood Post Office for lunch. You can either bring your own, or purchase lunch and drinks from the Post Office Cafe. On completion of the walk you will receive a copy of the GDTA ‘ Blackwood, Lose yourself in nature and history’ map which will allow you to explore further around Blackwood on your own. The map has links to extensive information about Blackwood’s history.
DIFFICULTY: The walk is rated Easy according to Bushwalking Victoria criteria but only suitable for people who regularly walk at least 4 km.
HEALTH AND SAFETY: If you are ill on the day of the walk, please stay at home. Please call or text the walk leader if you are unable to attend.
TOILETS: There is a public toilet at the starting/finishing point.
GUEST MEMBERSHIP AND INSURANCE: The walk is free to GDTA members. Non members are required to pay a $10 registration fee and sign in to validate insurance cover under the Bushwalking Victoria insurance policy. Please note that children under 5 years cannot be covered by this policy.
DOGS: Dogs are not allowed on this walk.
REGISTRATION: Registration via the GDTA website is essential. (https://www.gdt.org.au/events/moorabool-seniors) Bookings open on 21 September. Check your email for confirmation. If you don’t get one within a couple of hours, contact the walk organiser.
BRING: It is recommended that you carry a personal first aid kit, your own medication, water bottles, sunscreen and personal hiking gear (sun glasses, walking sticks, small pack, etc). Wear clothing appropriate for the predicted weather conditions on the day. Bring water and light refreshments as needed.
MEET: You can expect to be contacted by email by the walk leader with final details, including where and when we meet, a day or two in advance of the walk day.
