International Mountain Day 6 Blue Mount

DESCRIPTION: Blue Mountain / Wuid Krruirk (871m), little known mountain within the proposed Wombat – Lerderderg National Park south of Trentham: on the forested Great Divide, between Dja Dja Wurrung, Wadawurrung & Wurundjeri Country.
A sharp climb on a good surface to the exposed top of Blue Mountain. Blue Mountain is one of the most elevated points in The Wombat at 873 m. It is 4-5 million years older than most other eruption points in the Newer Volcanic Province and shares its 6-million-year-old age with Mt Wilson, Babbington’s Hill and Hanging Rock. Probably named Wuid Krruirk by surveyor Hoddle in the 1840-ies. Morning tea will be enjoyed at Blue Mount Pioneer Cemetery; buried here are the familiar mix of mining, sawmilling and farming families. The spiritual, social and economic conditions of its residents can be reconstructed from magisterial inquests into deaths and newspaper snippets. The summit is an open woodland-herbland mosaic, a product of thin soils on exposed sheets of basalt. The ground layer vegetation is totally unique for the Wombat Forest and we shall find some sheltered spots to look at fine detail. The exposed rocks are of a different type to the surrounding volcanic cones and highly weathered. The descent will be through tall herb rich foothill forest. Newbury Buddhist Monastery occupies the cleared west facing slope.
DIFFICULTY: Medium, for those who struggle with elevation gain it can be described as hard.
DOGS: Dogs on a leash are allowed.
REGISTRATION: Registration up until the Monday December 21
BRING: Walkers should bring their own first-aid kit and any required personal medications, water bottles, personal hiking gear (sun glasses, walking sticks, small pack, etc). Wear clothing appropriate for the predicted weather conditions on the day. Hiking boots or good walking shoes are recommended. Bring Lunch.
MEET: Newbury, off the Blackwood – Trentham road, to be confirmed closer to the date. Length may be shortened depending on the weather.
