DIFFICULTY: Medium, 11 km, altitude gain approx 375 m
DESCRIPTION: In 2026 the theme for our walk program is “Rivers, Lakes and Waterfalls” so it seems appropriate to commence our walks at the headwaters of four important Victorian rivers. Our first walk of the year will be in the coolest part of our regio, elevated Bullarto South. Don’t be surprised to see smoke coming from the local chimneys though, either because of a cold spell or because it is Sunday roast day. The walk starts near the heads of the Loddon (Kangaroo Creek), Werribee and Lerderderg rivers and not far from the head of the Coliban. The main divide is also the boundary between Dja Dja Wurrung and Wurundjeri Countries. The volcanic plain to the north was cleared from the 1870’s onwards when several timber mills operated in the area. Leaving the cleared land behind we will follow the broad valley of Slate Creek, a tributary of the Werribee River. This area was protected from the final logging round in the late 1990s and hosts impressive tall, 70-80 year old regrowth forest of messmate and mountain gum on the alluvial valley floor. The area will be protected as part of the Wombat-Lerderderg National Park but invasive species pose a significant risk. Melbourne Water’s grants program assists adjoining landholders to do their bit to protect this important catchment. The area is well known for several species that are listed as endangered including Brooker gum, Wiry Bossiaea and Gang Gang Cockatoo. We will have a break in a glade after crossing the Werribee and head back to the volcanic plateau through shrubby bush with scars from small-scale gold mining. If the predicted weather is hot we will shift the start to 9.00 am.
BRING:: Water, backpack, rain jacket, Personal first aid kit, sun hat and sunscreen, morning tea/lunch. Recommended: gaiters

DOGS: Dogs are/are not allowed on this walk. Refer to the GDTA dog policy.
BOOKINGS: Bookings are essential—see registration link. You may cancel your booking by returning to the GDTA website page and clicking the cancel button. This will free up a space for other walkers. If the walk is full, you can elect to be put on the waiting list. You will be emailed if a space becomes available. You have 24hrs before the space is withdrawn and offered to the next on the list.
GUEST MEMBERSHIP AND INSURANCE: The walk is free to members and members of affiliated clubs and open to non-members. For non-members, a $10 fee is payable for insurance cover under the Bushwalking Victoria insurance policy. Please note that children under 5 years cannot be covered by this policy.
