Byres Miners Tunnel, Lerderderg River

10km

DATE: Sunday, 29 October

TIME: 9.30am. Walk duration is estimated to take approximately 3-1/2 hours.

WALK LEADER: Gib Wettenhall

This 10Km circuit walk in the Lerderderg State Park follows the route of Walk 20 in the GDTA’s Central Victorian Highlands Walk and Ride Circuits guidebook. We will walk through wildflowers down to the Lerderderg River and contour along a high water race with spectacular views. We will take a steep side trip to the Miners Tunnel, cut for 25m through a river bend to give diggers easy access to gold in the 1850s. Then back up through bush on a little-used track, closed to vehicle traffic.

The walk is rated Medium with a steady decline at the start, then one short, steep incline half way through. The very steep descent and ascent to the Miners Tunnel is voluntary. Sturdy shoes and walking poles are recommended as there are rocky sections.

Bookings are essential and open 2 weeks before the date.
