Heart of the Wombat – GDTA Guided Walk Sunday 20 March

Start time: 9 am

Grade: Medium

Walk Leader: Arie Baelde

This walk will be about 13 km, mostly on well-formed tracks with a short distance cross country to reach an 1880s timber mill site. The walk is in the area of Walk 17 in our Central Victorian Highlands Walk and Ride Circuits book, in the upper reaches of the Lerderderg River. The walk will be entirely in the forest but will go from tree fern lined gullies, through tall Messmate forest to scrubby, eroded ridges. The focus is on the 19th century forest industries as well as on the plant communities in this high rainfall part of the Wombat forest.

There are some steep gravelly slopes so bring walking poles if you have them. There are no facilities in this part of the forest so bring food, water etc as required. Max elevation is around 800 m and weather is subject to change with little notice. Phone reception is intermittent and it can take quite some time to get back to civilization if required, so be prepared!

To register for the walk, click on the link below. Each walker must register separately. Registration is free for GDTA members. Non-member guests are welcome but must pay a $5 charge for insurance. To participate in GDTA events, it is a requirement that you are fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Vaccination certificates will be checked when you sign in.
